The late Jakab Gláser, known as “Uncle Judy”, spent his entire life around Teleki Square in Budapest — and kept its last apartment synagogue alive.
His parents were Orthodox Jewish immigrants from Poland, like many others in the area. His father was one of the founders of the shtiebels — the “apartment synagogues” — operating around Teleki Square. In the early 20th century there were many such intimate places of worship near the famous market of Józsefváros. Today, 22 Teleki Square is the only one that has survived, continuously operating for over 100 years thanks to the men of the Gláser family, Uncle Judy among them, until his death.

A néhai Gláser Jakab – Juci bácsi – egész életét a budapesti Teleki tér környékén élte le, és életben tartotta a tér utolsó lakásimaházát.
Szülei, mint sokan a környéken, Lengyelországból érkezett ortodox zsidó bevándorlók voltak. Apja a Teleki tér körül működő stiblik – lakásimaházak – egyikének alapítói közé tartozott. A 20. század elején sok ilyen bensőséges imahely működött a híres józsefvárosi piac közelében. Ma a Teleki tér 22. az egyetlen, amely fennmaradt: több mint száz éve folyamatosan működik, a Gláser család férfitagjainak – köztük Juci bácsinak, haláláig – köszönhetően.
